Lelystad is located in the heart of the former Zuiderzee region and has close connections with the water. It is the capital of the province of Flevoland and the second largest municipality in the Netherlands. Just a third of the surface area is land, the remainder is water. The IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes. There are numerous harbours on these lakes for pleasure craft, homes with private jetties and a number of historical towns and cities around the vast lakes.

The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands. When the Afsluitdijk ('Closure dike') causeway was constructed, a part of the Zuiderzee was closed off and the IJsselmeer lake was born. It is the perfect spot for water sports. From quiet fishing to doing somersaults whilst kite surfing, or a day on the water with your sailing boat or yacht. You can do these activities, of course, as an individual, but professional water sports companies are also situated around the IJsselmeer lake. They provide advice about the surroundings and also rent out boats and equipment.

East India Companies Ship 'Batavia'

The Batavia was a Dutch 'East Indiaman' ship from the 17th century. In 1629, the ship sprung a leak just off the west coast of Australia and the wreck can now be found in an Australian museum. A reconstruction of the ship has been built and this can be found on the Bataviawerf in Lelystad. As far as possible, any details from that time have been added to the ship. The Bataviawerf has become a centre for historic and traditional shipbuilding. It now attracts many tourists who want to see the replica of the East India Companies ship 'De Batavia' with their own eyes.
